According to reports from Bloomberg, Apple is apparently planning to release a smaller iPad, dubbed the “iPad Mini,” later this year. The device will reportedly measure at 7″ – 8″ diagonally, to compete with the Kindle Fire, and the newly released Google Nexus 7. Although Bloomberg didn’t list a price, it will cost less than the current iPad. However, speculation and reports from previous months says that this device could range from $200. It would not feature a retina display, but have most of the features of the current iPad. The device could launch in October, most likely with the unveiling of the iPhone and new iPod lineups.
It makes sense to me that Apple will release a miniature version of the iPad. They have substantial market share in the tablet market, and would be appealing to a target market of low-income earners. If Apple does indeed release this, it could take away consumers from other low-price tablet makers such as Apple and Amazon.
