If you’re like me, I use online storage a lot. And there are a variety of services out there, from Box, to Dropbox, to MobileMe iDisk, this app from Avatron software is an excellent app for managing your online storage. This app costs $9.99 in the Apple App Store, and is universal with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. This review was conducted on the iPad. Here is the link to download the app from the Canadian App Store.
This app features a “wireless hard disk,” which allows you to mount your iOS Device as a wireless drive on your computer over WiFi. This allows you to drag and drop files between your computer and Air Sharing Pro.
Air Sharing supports the following online services:
- MobileMe iDisk
- Public iDisk
- Google Docs/Drive
This app connects to an online server by logging in to the online storage service of your choice. You can even have more than one online server at the same time. Once you have logged in to your online account, you have access to all your files. From there, you have many options. One of my favourites is allowing you to save photos from your online storage directly to your camera roll. This app can also read the following file formats:
- Microsoft Office
- Web Archive (web pages)
- HTML web page
- Adobe Illustratior (saved as PDF Compatable)
- RTF and RTFD
- Plain text
- Movies, Audio, images in standard iPhone formats
Connecting to my online accounts was very easy and straightforward. To do this, all you have to do is press the small “+” button on the top, left-hand corner. The app interface is very clean and uncluttered, and navigating is a snap. You also have the ability to AirPrint your document/file, email the file, and delete your file. There is also a passcode security feature, which is perfect for securing your online documents in case your iOS device gets stolen.
However, connecting to your computer was extremely hard. I found the Core FTP desktop app extremely hard to use, and could not establish a connection between my iPad and computer. Avatron should bring out their own desktop app for easier connection, similar to how they have their own desktop application for Air Sharing. Another feature I wish for the company to add is the ability to upload photos or videos. Currently, they do not allow you to do this, but only view your files.
So you may ask, why should I fork out $9.99 when I can download the free individual apps for each online service? Sure you can do that, and I do this also. But if you have many online storage accounts, this app could be ideal for you. This app isn’t for everyone, but it certainly can pertain to a certain target market. But I do feel that the app could come down in price by one or two dollars.
Overall, this app is decent, but features need to be changed. Connecting to your computer has to be a bit easier, and can be achieved by Avatron’s own desktop app. The app needs to come down in price slightly, as this will be more affordable to consumers. The great feature of this app is just the ability to have all your online storage in one app, as well as passcode security.
